Self-made Decals

For a few years now, I have been custom painting railroad models. With that I also got into self made decals.

Until a short time ago I only did those decals for my Southern Pacific/Northwestern Pacific layout.

With the interest in the MGB in HOm, I began to design some of the decals for that layout as well.

The first model was a Eurocopter of the Air Zermatt, which I saw during my visit in Wallis, Switzerland.

The SBB Bus I found in Visp is not as spectacular as the Helicopter but since this bus runs only in Wallis, it is a great project for my self made decals. Unfortunately I only could take a picture of the bus while in motion. Luckily the bus company Ruffiner, the SBB and the organizer of the Open Air Gampel have web sites and I found the necessary logos.

First traced the logos and letters in my paint program.

The decals will be printed out with an Alps printer, which makes it impossible to print the above sheet in this form.

The Alps is a dry printer and can only print gold, silver, black, magenta, cyan, yellow, and all important white. Because of that, I have to print the decals one color at the time, and in the case of green as yellow and cyan.

Another problem is to print out the decals in the right size for the Model. I work usually with 1/10 of a millimeter. Because of that, I change all logos to computer fonts. I am able now to resize a logo by 0.1 pixels at the time.

Since now every logo is a computer font, I use MS Publisher instead of a paint program for the next steps.

After the logos and letters are resized perfectly, the pieces are divided in different colors. Each color gets an individual page and printed out on the Alps in the overlay mode.

Und nun ist das anbringen angesagt.

And now I only have to apply them.

On my "Models" page, I have some of my self made decal models showcased.
